I've brewed a lot of all-grain kits over the years from a range of manufacturers, and I have to say the Grainfather Bay Break – West Coast IPA kit is one of the better put-together kits I've used.
What stood out immediately was the quality of the ingredients. The malt was fresh, clean and evenly crushed, giving excellent mash efficiency with no issues during recirculation or sparging. The hops smelled incredibly fresh as soon as the packs were opened, with loads of bright citrus, pine and resin character exactly as you'd expect from a classic West Coast IPA. Nothing felt like it had been thrown together as an afterthought, everything looked and smelled like premium ingredients.
The instructions deserve a special mention. They're some of the clearest and most user-friendly I've come across. Every stage is laid out in a logical order with just the right amount of detail, making it almost impossible to second-guess yourself. Even as someone who's brewed for years, I appreciated how straightforward they were. They're detailed enough to inspire confidence without overwhelming you with unnecessary information, and I can see them being ideal for both newer all-grain brewers and experienced homebrewers who just want a smooth brew day.
The brew itself went exactly as planned, with all the timings and water volumes making perfect sense. It's refreshing to use a kit where everything has clearly been thought through and tested.
Overall, this is a genuinely high-quality kit that delivers on every front, excellent ingredients, exceptionally clear instructions and a hassle-free brewing experience. If this is the standard Grainfather is setting with their recipe kits, I'll definitely be trying more of them. Highly recommended.
